Types of Cedar Roofs Roofs We Install

Wood shingles and shakes have been popular roofing materials for hundreds of years. Their strength is derived from how thick they are, which depends on which part of the tree they were cut from. When shingles are cut from a stronger and thicker part of the tree, they will be more durable, as well as more expensive. Cedar shake and cedar shingle sound very similar, so let’s talk about what makes them different!

Cedar Shake Roofing

Cedar shakes are hand-made, so they have a more rustic look than wood shingles. They add a distinctive look to your home and make an excellent impression! Each piece is individually made, so there will be more variance between each piece. It’s vital for a professional roofer to install a cedar shake roof because different-sized pieces can leave your roof susceptible to gaps and leaks. Guardian Roofs has the knowledge and experience to install a cedar shake roof that is reliable and water-tight!

Cedar Shingle Roofing

Cedar cut shingles are cut by a machine and the pieces are more uniform than cedar shakes. This makes wood shingles less expensive than cedar shakes. They are lightweight, easy to maintain, and energy-efficient. A great choice for a more natural look for your home!

The Pros and Cons of Cedar Roofing

When making your selection about the type of cedar roofing to fit your needs, there will be pros and cons. We have broken down the list for you:

Pros of Cedar Roofing

  • Natural: Cedar shingles and shakes are totally natural because they come from trees! They are 100% biodegradable and friendly to the earth. Stylistically, they look great on bungalows, Cape Cod, cottage, Craftsman, and Tudor-style homes.
Energy Efficient Cedar roofing material is incredibly energy-efficient. It insulates your home while still allowing it to breathe, which saves on heating and cooling costs.
  • Durable: Cedar roofing lasts up to 25 years, which is longer than a standard asphalt shingle roof.

Cons of Cedar Roofing

  • Not for wet climates: If you live in an area with a wet climate, you may decide against cedar shakes or shingles. The constant moisture can cause a cedar roof to mold, split, or rot over time.
  • Drying issues: Because they are natural wood, cedar shakes and shingles are prone to drying out more than other roofing materials. This makes them susceptible to fire. We recommend purchasing Class A fire-rated wood roofing products that include shingles treated with fire-resistant coating for maximum protection.

We were looking to prepare our roof for a future solar panel installation. Guardian Roofs stood out for their fair pricing and exceptional customer service. Mario, our project manager, was always responsive and knowledgeable, addressing … More our questions and concerns promptly, even outside of regular business hours. When we had specific worries or requests, Mario would personally visit the job site to address them directly.
The Guardian Roofs crew was professional, efficient, and meticulous about cleaning up. We were impressed with their quality of work and commitment to customer satisfaction. We highly recommend Guardian Roofs for any roofing project.

Both my wife and I have been extremely satisfied with everyone from Guardian Roofs. Doug Hein is one sharp guy. My neighbor and I were so impressed with him that we both decided to get our roofs done after meeting with 5 different companies. … More
Mario was the superintendent responsible for the job and called me consistently to see how things were going and answered every question I had. Alex was my main contact throughout the job and arrived at 7:00 am everyday which I appreciated. He was very personable and I did my best to let him do his job. Whenever there was an area that had to be addressed, Alex would talk to me prior to changing anything without my permission. Freddie did a fantastic job of laying out the tiles and was very efficient and clean. My house was cleaned every day and I never had any issues. Mona Portillo along with Helen were great to work with from the office as well. As I mentioned earlier, Guardian Roofs went above and beyond my expectations!! Thank you for making us very happy.

We had a major roof leak during the last atmospheric river in So. California. We began the roofing education process by seeking five bids. We were told various things about how to fix our problem roof but most of them turned out to be wrong. … More There was real misinformation from most of the roofers saying that a repair was possible ( it wasn’t) or an expensive re-layment was the only option. Our last bid was from Guardian Roof. With one look, Mario correctly identified that our then current tiles were discontinued because they were defective and in fact would not tolerate being pulled up and re-laid without a lot of breakage, as three other companies had bid. This observation was corroborated by another informed roofer but who was more expensive. So, for the SAME price that others were quoting to pull off the whole roof, repair a small section with new tiles and then re-use our old ( defective and crumbling) tiles to put back down, Guardian gave us a whole NEW tile roof as well as repairing some newly discovered termite damage. They were very responsive to our needs and worked steadily to complete the whole job in a week’s time, after the tiles were available. It looks beautiful! We were very happy with their honest and correct assessment of what was really needed, their very fair pricing, and their good work. So very glad we kept getting more bids until we found the right company for the job.

If you need a roof done right at an affordable price, these folks are the ones to hire. My roof was installed a year ago and it not only looks great, but it does everything that a roof should do. No leaks and it keeps the house really cool … More (old roof didn’t have the new heat tech that my new one does). I also appreciate that after the work was done each day, they always cleaned up after themselves!

We just had our roof replaced by Guardian Roofs in San Diego. We could not be happier. The crew led by Angelo was amazing. They swept our property clean each day. They subcontracted with Solar Repair Doctors to remove and replace our panel … More system and that also went without a hitch. Thank you to our project manager Diana and our sales rep Kevin. They all said how it was going to go down and it worked like a charm! Ready for the rains!
